In terms of name recognition and sheer search numbers, the Google search engine is currently untouchable. Google through its partners (notably America Online) and its own search site accounts for more than 50 percent of all Internet searches worldwide. To many Internet users, the name Google has become de facto synonymous with Internet search. Indeed, the verb to Google has found its way into the vocabularies of Web users across the world. This means that the single most effective way to expose a Web site to a Web-wide audience is to have it featured and highly ranked with Google. However, several other search engines are significant enough to warrant the Web site owner's attention.
The Internet features a multitude of search engines, many of which have their own devoted following. And although Google continues to rank supreme, Yahoo!, MSN and, to a lesser extent, Ask Jeeves are slowly catching up with the leader in terms of reach and innovative technology. In addition to the aforementioned heavyweight search engines, a large number of search engines serve niche audiences on the Web.
Lately, Google's throne has been under siege as heavyweights Microsoft and Yahoo! the latter being the most visited site on the Web have taken aim at Google's position. Until Yahoo! terminated the partnership in March 2004, Google supplied the bulk part of Yahoo!'s search results. However, Yahoo! through its aggressive acquisitions of algorithmic search engines Inktomi, AltaVista, AlltheWeb and pay-per-click giant Overture Yahoo! positioned itself to challenge Google directly and thus severed its relationship with Google and launched its own search technology. As Microsoft MSN Search in early 2005 abandoned its reliance on Yahoo! for algorithmic search results and implemented its own technology, the search engine industry is gradually turning into a three-horse race, with Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! fiercely competing for the top spot. Other engines will undoubtedly continue to serve Internet users. But they are not likely to challenge the influence of the three titans in any foreseeable future.
For those Web site owners who are willing to pay for Internet exposure, Google's AdWords program and Yahoo!'s Search Marketing program (formerly Overture) offer the most influential, and most competitive, pay-per-click programs available. Through these programs, Web site owners can secure exposure by paying on a cost-per-click basis to be listed as Sponsored Results for particular keywords.
