  • The exact nature of Google's ranking algorithm is not known to the public. It is, however, well known that among the more than 100 factors encompassed by the algorithm, the following elements are of the utmost importance to Google's ranking calculations
    • Link building Links quality back links (i.e., inbound links) are the most important elements in Google's ranking procedures. Google will carefully review the origin and anchor text of an indexed page's back links while calculating the page's PageRank and search engine ranking. Links from high-ranking, topically similar pages generally are considered high-quality links and will consequently impact the page's search engine ranking positively.
    • Link text The anchor text of a page's back links is particularly important when Google calculates the page's relevance to a given keyword query. In short A back link tells Google that the originating page considers the linked-to page important; the anchor text tells Google why it is important. Keywords found in back link anchor text will generally boost a page's search engine ranking.
    • Page copy Google carefully reviews the content of all indexed pages. Unique, informative well-composed, keyword-rich page copy is critical to a page's Google ranking.
    • Title tag The Title tag remains an important search engine optimization element as Google looks for and rewards keywords in this page element. The search engine strongly warns against keyword spamming in the Title tag and may penalize pages that deemed to be using such methods.
    As per Google's patent application of 2003, the engine further reserves the right to review the following elements when deciding its search engine rankings.
    • Domain registration length Google may be reviewing the domain registration length and Whois information for pages in its index. The rationale appears to be that search engine spammers likely will rely on short-term (one-year) domain registration for their Web sites, whereas Webmasters who put quality content on their sites will be more likely to register their domains for longer periods at a time.
    • Ranking history A Web page's ranking history also might play a role in Google's ranking calculations. In essence, Web pages whose rankings suddenly skyrocket might raise a red flag and trigger Google's suspicion. Conversely, a page that has gradually increased its ranking over a similar amount of time most likely will be considered bona fide and thus will not be penalized.
    • Clickthrough rates Another issue that Google reserves the right to look at is the clickthrough rate of a given page. Basically, if the page has a high clickthrough rate when listed among Google's search results, then Google may interpret that as a stamp of approval from its users. Conversely, a low clickthrough rate might indicate that the page in question was not what Google users were looking for in relation to particular keywords. Google thus could demote pages with particularly low clickthrough rates.
    • Link-acquisition speed Because link analysis is the single most important Google ranking factor, the search engine is particularly vigilant about combating link spamming. This means that Web pages that seem to gain thousands of back links overnight immediately will raise Google's suspicion unless there is an obvious reason why those links appeared. Google prefers that pages build links at a steady pace.
    Note that it is unclear whether or not (and to which extent) Google in fact has implemented these factors. And whether or not it ever will.
